PROFILE
Scientific American (Sci Am) targets decision makers around the world with content that combines science, technology, policy and business. The magazine aims bridge the gap between the research community and those who put new discoveries into action. Each issue identifies developments in energy, the environment and information science along with research and development across a range of fields.
In Janurary 2009, Sci Am became part of scientific publisher Nature Publishing Group. This was followed by the unveiling of a redesigned website that focused on a number of channels and an increase in sub-channels. It also introduced a paywall for feature article; however content exclusive to the web has remained free. The move provides free-to-air access sponsorship opportunities. For 2010, Sci Am is adjusting its North American rate base to 450,000 to put it in line with other innovation-orientated titles. It will also produce a “policy maker” edition targeting major academic research centres, financial and business centres with a circulation between 200,000 and 250,000.
