Lucky 13: Jason Hemingway, Thunderhead

So who is Jason Hemingway, other than chief marketing officer of Thunderhead? Think bearded Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi. It’s Lucky 13 time.

1 – Summarise yourself in three words?

“Breaks all the rules.”

2 – What made you want to pursue a career in media and marketing?

“I’ve always been interested in people – studying psychology, philosophy, and politics at university – understanding what makes them tick, and cause and effect. I didn’t start out as a marketer, but moved into it fairly early on because it seemed such an interesting and varied area.

“Why am I still here? It’s always evolving and I love that.  The marketing landscape is changing continually and things are very different to when I started out. Technology now plays a very significant role.”

3 – Describe your ideal client

“For me, the ideal client is passionate and obsessed about the relationships they build with their customers. A client with a customer-centric mind-set is ideal to work with and where I can be a valuable resource to them.”

4 – Name your favourite ever campaign

“I’m not too sure about favourite ever but a real standout campaign for me was Skype, ‘Stay Together’. The emotion in the campaign captured my attention and I still remember how I felt when I saw it for the first time. Skype nailed it by focusing on emotions and feelings, not features and functionality.”

5 – Which award win are you most proud of and why?

“I was included in the Hot Topics ‘100 most influential B2B marketing leaders in Europe’. I’m proud of it because it’s a pretty exclusive list.”

6 – Who is the best industry speaker you have seen?

“Dave Trott. I always love watching him in person as well as his writing. He’s always got brilliant and interesting things to say on marketing and advertising.”

7 – Which is your favourite social media platform, and why?

“I’m a fan of Facebook for staying in touch with friends and family globally. And, I think LinkedIn is a brilliant business tool.”

8 – Where is your ideal meeting venue?

“Dean Street Townhouse, Soho.”

9- What is your favourite restaurant?

“Docks Oyster Bar, New York.”

10 – What is hot in international media and marketing, and what is not?

“What’s hot: Customer engagement, marketing tech, and the end-to-end customer journey.

“What’s not: Mass marketing – it’s lazy and offensive.”

11 – Which industry buzzword would you ban?

“Big data.”

12 – Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?

“I love the freedom when working in a start-up environment and I’m pretty wedded to the tech space so I’ll most likely crack on with that for the next 10 years and beyond. One day I might own a little boat and sail off into the sunset, but that’s a long time off.”

13 – Finally, who would play you in a movie of your life?

“I’d love to think a bearded Ewan McGregor (think Obi-Wan Kenobi) but that’s probably a little flattering…”
