Mediabrands Malaysia wins industry giant Sime Darby’s media account

IPG Mediabrands has been awarded the media planning and buying business for Malaysian conglomerate Sime Darby, which represents brands including BMW, Ford, Hyundai and Jaguar Land Rover across 10 APAC countries.

The business was won off Mindshare, which had handled the account since 2009. Mediabrands Malaysia pitched against the incumbent, as well as another three agencies – ZenithOptimedia, Starcom and Carat. The pitch took place last month.

Sime Darby is Malaysia’s largest publicly-listed conglomerate and has businesses in an array of sectors, including automotive, plantations, industrial equipment, property, and energy and utilities. It has operations in more than 20 countries.

Sime Darby Motors is the automotive arm of Sime Darby Berhad and is involved in the assembly, retail and distribution of motoring brands in 10 countries in Asia Pacific. It represents 30 brands, including BMW, McLaren, Rolls Royce, Jaguar Land Rover, Ford, Peugeot and Hyundai. It has property developments in areas such as residential and hospitality, and retail facilities in Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and Australia.

Kagee Chew, IPG Mediabrands Malaysia’s senior vice-president, said: “Sime Darby wanted a dynamic product that brought together the power of new age connections, content and commerce in one integrated  thinking, and have the genuine credibility to deliver it.”
