Music artists line up to take on Spotify with ad-free streaming service Tidal

Music artists such as Jay Z, Kanye West and Beyonce are looking to take on Spotify with the relaunch of advertising-free music streaming service Tidal.

Tidal

Tidal was originally launched by a Norwegian company in October 2014, before being acquired by Jay Z earlier this year.

The rapper now aims to challenge the likes of Spotify and Deezer – as well as YouTube and Apple, which are expected to launch streaming services – with a combination of exclusive artist content and “curated” features and interviews.

Tidal was relaunched last night with a high-profile gathering of 17 co-owner artists, including Rihanna, Arcade Fire, Madonna, Daft Punk and Calvin Harris, following a social media campaign using the hashtag #TIDALforALL.

Unlike Spotify, Tidal will not offer an ad-funded free version. Instead, users will offered a $9.99 basic version and a $19.99 “high-fidelity” streaming package.

Spotify has previously clashed with stars such as Taylor Swift and Radiohead’s Thom Yorke over the fees it offers artists; Tidal claims its service includes a more appropriate remuneration for artists.

However, it is not believed that the Tidal-owner artists will withdraw their music from rival services.

Tidal is available in 31 markets globally, with six more to follow in the coming months, including Germany and Australia. It has access to 25 million tracks and 75,000 videos.
