New York Times promotes Meredith Kopit Levien to chief revenue officer post

The New York Times has promoted its advertising head Meredith Kopit Levien to the role of chief revenue officer to oversee all ad and subscription revenue schemes.

Kopit Levien, a former chief revenue officer at Forbes, first joined the Times as executive vice president, advertising, in July 2013. Prior to this, she spent five years in senior roles with Atlantic Media.

Kopit Levien has “transformed” the Times’ advertising group, wrote chief executive Mark Thompson in an internal memo. The publisher hopes it will be able to “accelerate” revenue growth by unifying advertising and marketing under a single role.

“I have come to believe that, like product and technology, unifying the responsibilities of advertising and marketing under single leadership will offer us the opportunity to more effectively balance the needs and accelerate the progress of both groups,” wrote Thompson in the memo. ”It will also enable us to speak with one voice to the market about our revenue objectives.”

The Times last year reported its smallest decline in ad revenues in nearly a decade. The upturn in performance is partly credited to the introduction of native ad formats under Kopit Levien.
