US smartphone adoption on the rise

Almost half of mobile subscribers in the US (49.7%) now own smartphones, according to the latest Nielsen figures.

As of February 2012, smartphone ownership increased by 38%, with only 36% of mobile subscribers owning a smartphone in February 2011.

The US smartphone market continues to be dominated by Android, with 48% of smartphone owners using an Android OS device. Apple’s iPhone is in the pockets of 32.1% of smartphone owners and Blackberry trails with an 11.6% share of the market.

Two thirds of those acquiring a new mobile device in the last three months chose a smartphone over a feature phone and of those surveyed, 48% said they had chosen Android and 43% bought an iPhone.
