Newsweek profitable in EMEA for the first time, claims IBT Media

After years of turmoil, and the brief cessation of its print edition, Newsweek is finally returning to profitability, according to its owner IBT Media.

The publisher – which also owns the International Business Times digital news portal – has announced the Newsweek has recorded its first ever profitable quarter in EMEA.

Ad revenues for the fourth quarter in 2015 were up 327% year-on-year reports IBT Media, driven, it claims, by a “three-pronged strategy” to drive print and digital ad revenues, as well as subscriptions, across Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Overall Newsweek revenues are up 90% year-on-year, while traffic to europe.newsweek.com has increased by 250% on the same period in 2015.

It follows a number of changes to Newsweek’s operations in EMEA, including the appointment of Matt McAllester as Europe editor in July last year and the recruitment of former Economist sales boss Jeremy Makin nine months ago.

Following its acquisition of the title in 2013, IBT Media briefly rolled out standalone Europe edition, before merging its operations to align its global editions, led by editor-in-chief Jim Impoco in New York.

“This is a brilliant result for Newsweek across EMEA and proves our strategy is working,” said Dev Pragad, co-founder and managing director at IBT Media for UK and EMEA.

“Our winning combination of exceptional editorial and a 360-degree advertising solution gets results for brands. We will be developing our offering further in 2016, which will see even more effective results for our advertising partners. The investment we’ve made is the key to our growth and a successful year ahead.”

On Monday (18 January), IBT Media revealed the appointment of Hearst Magazine’s Greg Witham as its first chief operating officer for the EMEA region.
