Oculus Rift package to cost around $1500, says CEO Brendan Iribe

Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe has announced that its highly-anticipated virtual-reality headset and the PC needed to run it will cost $1,500.

Speaking at the Re/Code conference in Southern California yesterday, Iribe said that the hefty price tag is only for people who are starting from scratch in buying the tech, as previous indications suggested that the headsets would cost around $350.

Oculus confirmed on its blog earlier this month that the first consumer edition of its Rift virtual reality headset will be available for shipping in the first quarter of 2016. Pre-orders are said to be made available later this year.

The headset will be based on the Crescent Bay prototype with an “improved tracking system that supports both seated and standing experiences”.

Iribe said: “We are looking at an all-in price, if you have to go out and actually need to buy a new computer and you’re going to buy the Rift… at most you should be in that $1,500 range.”

He did not disclose the cost of the package items individually.
