One year on: Meet the Millennials 2015’s Laurence Blanchard

As M&M Global kicks off its annual search for the brightest talent in international media and marketing, we take the chance to catch up with one of the ‘Class of 2015’, Vizeum’s Laurence Blanchard.

Laurence Blanchard

When we last spoke to Laurence, he was working as strategy and innovation director for Dentsu Aegis Network’s Vizeum in the UK.

A promotion and an international move has followed in the intervening 12 months – so we checked in to find out how his career in media is progressing, and to gain some words of advice for this year’s entrants.

M&M-BadgeHow has your career progressed over the past 12 months?

“Almost five months ago I took an exciting internal opportunity, as head of social and content for Vizeum USA. Not only has this meant a move to NYC but I have got the chance to get involved in the rapid transition of our new client Fox Broadcast alongside working on media, content and social strategies for Sonos, National Geographic and Shiseido.

“I will soon be working on innovation partnership projects for Fox Broadcast out in LA so am looking forward to spending more time on the other coast (and of course missing the winter in New York) and building a close working relationship with the internal Fox creative team and relevant media and content platforms.”

What have been the highlights since you entered ‘Meet the Millennials’?

“Unsurprisingly the biggest highlight has been my move to NYC. It has been a big change that has really taken me out of my comfort zone. I would recommend it to anyone.

“Over and above a lifestyle change I would say working on US strategy for Fox’s new shows was particularly rewarding. Seeing your creative media work come to life is always a great feeling, whether that is Vice created digital content, OOH for Son of Zorn, or Kylie Jenner, the largest user on the platform, using one of our Exorcist Snapchat filter.”

What impact has participating in ‘Meet the Millennials’ had on your career?

“It has had a twofold affect, unlocking doors internally to meet senior leaders from across the network (both from a business unit and international perspective) but also building self-confidence in my abilities.”

What advice do you have for those looking to start a career in media and marketing?

“Get a broad range of experiences at the outset so that not only can you select your specialism in an informed way, but also develop integrated approached to holistic ecosystems where the user is put first.

“Be inquisitive about technology, consumers’ changing behaviours and the wider world. If you are intrigued by the changes that are occurring at a speed never seen before, try to understand them, the trends that fuel them and where they may go next.”

What do you believe are the most important industry trends going into 2017?

“Outside of the technology trends of VR, AI, the dynamic between creativity and big data, walled gardens and brand commerce I believe there is a seismic shift underway in the structure of the industry.

“As specialists and consultants are taking ground from agencies I believe we will enter a period of consolidation and a move back towards full service agencies.”
