Snapchat COO Emily White leaves as founder Evan Spiegel takes on greater role

Snapchat chief operating officer Emily White has left the photo messaging service, with co-founder Evan Spiegel set to take a more hands-on role.

White joined Snapchat from Instagram in late 2013, and has been responsible for much of the business since then, including sales and HR.

However, just days after it was announced that Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group is investing $200m in Snapchat, White has decided to leave for unknown reasons.

A Snapchat spokesperson told Re/code: “Emily is a talented executive and we thank her for her many contributions to Snapchat.”

With Snapchat valued at an estimated $15bn, and recently having launched its ad products costing a reported $750,000 a day, CEO Spiegel is understood to be taking a more direct involvement in running the company.

In 2013, Spiegel turned down a $3bn acquisition offer from Facebook’s chief executive Mark Zuckerberg. Facebook then went on to acquire popular messaging app WhatsApp instead for $19bn.

As of May last year, Snapchat users were sending 700 million photos and videos per day, while Snapchat Stories were being viewed 500 million times per day.
