Subway sees return of former global marketing chief Chris Carroll

Subway has seen the return of former global marketing chief Chris Carroll, the same week that news broke of the departure of global CMO Tony Pace.

According to a report in Ad Age, Carroll, who was senior vice-president of global marketing between 1999 and 2005, has returned to the Subway fold having already reinvolved himself with the company recently to advise on its ongoing creative review.

While it is unclear exactly what his role at Subway is, according to the report some executives are saying that he is in line to fill the global chief marketing officer vacancy left by the departure of Pace, who announced plans to set up his own consultancy, Cerebral Graffiti.

But Subway told Ad Age: “Chris Carroll has not been named Subway CMO”.

Pace, who joined Subway in 2006 as the CMO of its advertising fund and who became the global marketing chief in 2012, announced his departure earlier this week.

According to the Cerebral Graffiti holding website, Pace is leaving Subway on 30 September but will continue his role of chairman of the Association of National Advertisers, having been elected by industry peers in 2014.

News of Pace’s departure and Carroll’s arrival comes a fortnight after former Subway spokesman Jared Fogle became embroiled in a scandal after his home has raided by federal and state authorities. Pace told the Wall Street Journal that his departure was unrelated to Fogle’s departure.
